Morocco players donate blood for earthquake victims
Morocco's national team spent time donating blood for the victims of its country's devastating earthquake, a disaster that led to the postponement of its Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia.
More than 1000 people are reported to have been killed after the 6.8 magnitude quake struck on Saturday, with hundreds more injured as cities such as Marrakesh suffered catastrophic damage.
The match was set to be played at Agadir, at the south-west edge of the affected area, but was called off soon after the quake struck.
A statement from the Morooco football federation read: "Following the earthquake that struck some areas in Morocco, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces the postponement of the match that was scheduled to take place on Saturday evening, 9 September, 2023 [Sunday 10 September AEST], between the national team and its Liberian counterpart, in the final round of qualifiers for the finals of the African Cup of Nations - Côte d’Ivoire 2024, until a later time, in agreement with the Confederation of African Football.
"After this great injury, the national football family extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured."
Star players such as Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi were pictured giving blood to help save victims of the disaster.
