Atletico Madrid 2-0 Real Oviedo: Sorloth shines in routine victory
Alexander Sorloth's early brace proved the difference for Atletico Madrid, who made history during their comfortable win over Real Oviedo.
Alexander Sorloth scored twice as Atletico Madrid recorded their sixth straight LaLiga victory by seeing off lowly Real Oviedo 2-0.
The Norway international struck a first-half brace at the Metropolitano to move Diego Simeone's side within a point of second-place Real Madrid.
After going close twice early on, Sorloth made it third time lucky in the 16th minute, tucking away David Hancko's cross from close range.
That was the forward's third league goal of the season, and he made it four 10 minutes later, volleying home at the second attempt after Real Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell initially thwarted him.
The visitors sought a response after the break. Federico Vinas headed just over, while Salomon Rondon and Santi Cazorla were unable to capitalise from promising positions.
Giuliano Simeone and Conor Gallagher were denied late on at the other end, as Atletico cruised to a sixth straight league victory.
Data Debrief: History for Atletico and Simeone
Atletico are the first team in LaLiga history to score first in each of their opening 14 matches in a single season.
Meanwhile, Los Rojiblancos have found the net in every one of their opening 14 matches in a LaLiga campaign for the first time since 1978-79.
Simeone, meanwhile, was facing his 33rd different opponent in LaLiga, and has now beaten 32 of the 33 teams he has faced, except for Racing Santander. The Argentine also recorded his 323rd victory in the Spanish top flight, moving joint-second with Miguel Munoz on the all-time list, behind Luis Aragones (344).
It was a typically stout defensive display from the hosts, who limited Oviedo to just one attempt on target and 0.85 expected goals (xG). Sorloth, meanwhile, had eight of Atletico's 14 attempts, getting four of those on target.
