Le Bris satisfied with Sunderland victory as strong start to season continues
Regis Le Bris emphasised the importance of his Sunderland side returning to winning ways as they beat Wolves 2-0.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris was impressed with how his side returned to winning ways as they continued their fine start to life in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Wolves.
Nordi Mukiele got the Black Cats off and running with a goal in the first half and Ladislav Krejci’s own goal ensured that they would remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light, with no side having won more points at home so far this season.
They had lost their last match before the international break, a 2-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, and Le Bris highlighted how vital it was to get another win on the board after that disappointment.
“It’s an important win,” the Frenchman told BBC Sport.
“It was important to react after the [Manchester] United defeat last time out."
“I was happy with the mind-set of the team. We started well and dominated possession."
“We generated momentum and chances. My only regret was we didn't score the second goal until late."
Mukiele, who arrived from Paris St-Germain in the summer, scored his first Premier League goal and put in a strong display which delighted Le Bris.
He said: "He has really good energy.
“He is a good player with a specific profile. He always shows this energy to go forward. Sometimes we have to manage that energy."
Le Bris’ men have now made the best start of any Sunderland side in the top flight since 1999/2000, while it’s also the best of any promoted team since Wolves under Nuno Espirito Santo in 2018/19.
Nevertheless, the head coach does not want to look too far ahead, but admits that points on the board at this early stage can only be a good thing when it comes to staving off relegation at the end of the season.
"For me it's just a question of the next game,” Le Bris said.
“It's a long journey and a tough journey. If we can win points early, it's good for the confidence."
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira was left unimpressed by his side’s level in the first half, which he believed cost his side the game as their poor start to the season continued.
The Midlands outfit have failed to win any of their first eight matches of the league season for a second season running, becoming just the second side in Premier League history to do so.
"The first half was technically poor,” Pereira told BBC Sport.
“When I look back at the first half, I don't remember good moments. In the second half we corrected our moments and in my opinion we played 30 minutes of high quality football and created three or four chances to score.
"In the Premier League you cannot lose these moments. But in the end we concede.
"They scored their goals, and we missed our chances. You have moments in football."
