Nice 1-5 Marseille: Greenwood brace sends visitors to top of Ligue 1
Marseille temporarily moved to the top of Ligue 1 after Mason Greenwood's brace helped them beat Nice 5-1 at Allianz Riviera.
Mason Greenwood scored twice as Marseille thrashed Nice 5-1 at Allianz Riviera to go top of Ligue 1.
Greenwood's double came after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring on 11 minutes, while Timothy Weah and Igor Paixao also got on the scoresheet to move Marseille above Paris Saint-Germain in the standings, with the Parisiens facing Le Havre on Saturday.
Marseille took a deserved lead when Benjamin Pavard headed Greenwood's corner goal-bound, and Aubameyang was on hand to flick the ball beyond the bodies on the line and into the back of the net.
Greenwood scored his first just after the half-hour mark, with his strike wrong-footing Yehvann Diouf in the Nice goal, but followed it up with an even better goal after the break as he dribbled through the opposition defence before firing past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
Aubameyang continued his impact in the second half, too, assisting both Weah and Paixao either side of Mohamed-Ali Cho's effort for the hosts as Roberto De Zerbi's side ran away with the scoreline.
Greenwood had a brilliant chance to score a third late on, dribbling into the box before looking to place the ball into the bottom-left corner, but Diouf did well to get down quickly and deny the forward, though the damage was already done.
Data Debrief: Greenwood and Aubameyang run riot
De Zerbi got the clinical performance he would have been hoping for from his side after the international break, with Marseille producing 2.87 expected goals (xG) from 11 shots on target to Nice's 1.2 from seven attempts on goal.
Greenwood has now scored 10 goals in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other player in the competition. Indeed, he is the fourth player to reach double figures for goals in Europe's top five leagues this season after Harry Kane (13), Kylian Mbappe (13) and Erling Haaland (14).
It was a landmark day for Aubameyang, who has now scored 400 goals in his professional career. The Gabon international led his side in touches in the box (five), chances created (four), big chances (two) and assists (two).
