Oxford United 2-1 Ipswich Town: Placheta snaps winless streak with clinical finish
Oxford United snapped their five-game winless run in the Championship as they defeated Ipswich Town 2-1 at The Kassam Stadium.
Oxford United moved out of the relegation zone in the Championship as they beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at The Kassam Stadium.
Goals from Mark Harris and Przemyslaw Placheta, either side of a brilliant volley from Leif Davis, saw Oxford move up to 19th in the standings, while Ipswich have missed the chance to go second and put pressure on the surrounding teams ahead of the weekend's action.
Oxford took the lead after 24 minutes following a mistake from Azor Matusiwa. The 27-year-old underhit a pass towards Cedric Kipre, and Harris pounced on the error before firing past Christian Walton.
Ipswich equalised in the opening minutes of the second half. Marcelino Nunez picked out Davis on the edge of the box from a corner, and the left-back volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give his side the momentum.
Jaden Philogene saw a curling effort denied by Jamie Cummings before the Oxford goalkeeper also saved a near-post strike from George Hirst with his face, which caused a brief stoppage in play.
However, as Ipswich continued to push forward, their high line was caught out by a counter-attack. Brian De Keersmaecker played a ball over the top of the defence, and Placheta latched onto it before slotting it in at the near post for the win.
Data Debrief: Currie does the dirty work
Ipswich were in the ascendancy when Davis levelled the match, but they failed to capitalise on their chances. The Tractor Boys accumulated 1.7 expected goals (xG) from 18 shots, while Oxford produced 1.24 from 13 attempts.
Although Placheta and Cummings might get most of the plaudits, it was also a fantastic display from Oxford left-back Jack Currie. He won the joint-most tackles for his side (four), recorded the joint-most interceptions (two), won the most duels (seven), and had the second-most touches (44).
Oxford are now two points above the relegation zone, while Ipswich could now drop out of the playoff places by the end of the week.
