Record day for Ramos ruined by penalty misses

Sunday's (AEDT) dramatic UEFA Nations League clash saw captain Ramos, who blocked a shot on his own line, twice foiled from the spot by Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer, spoiling the Spaniard's 177th international appearance

The milestone makes Ramos the most-capped European male player after he moved past Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon.

Ramos's misses on his big night appeared as though they would cost Spain dear as Remo Freuler's 26th-minute half-volley put Switzerland on course for a first Group A4 victory.

But the hosts, who lost Nico Elvedi to a red card for his part in the second penalty at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, were denied in the last minute as Gerard spared Ramos's blushes and prevented Spain from falling to successive defeats in the competition.
