Doi back to winning ways in Taiwan
A year on from her defeat in the Taiwan Open final, Misaki Doi opened the 2017 tournament with victory over Nao Hibino.
Misaki Doi made a winning start at the Taiwan Open as she looks to banish the memories of finishing as runner-up 12 months ago.
Doi did not drop a set as she raced to the final in 2016, but she was not able to get past Venus Williams and was comfortably beaten 6-4 6-2.
A year on and she began the 2017 tournament with a hard-fought 6-2 2-6 6-4 triumph over Japanese compatriot Nao Hibino, the sixth seed moving on to a second-round meeting with Risa Ozaki.
Ozaki progressed as Sorana Cirstea retired through injury midway through the second set, the Romanian trailing 7-6 (7-3) 3-2 at the time.
Fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova brushed aside Miyu Kato 6-0 6-4 and there were also victories for fellows seeds Katerina Siniakova and Shelby Rogers.
Siniakova came from a set down to beat Galina Voskoboeva 5-7 6-4 6-2, as did Mandy Minella as she battled past Jana Cepelova 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
Monday's final match saw Ons Jabeur set up a meeting with Rogers in round two thanks to a 6-4 4-6 6-1 win over Nicola Gibbs.
