Old boy Ben Arfa ruins Rennes on return
Rennes warmed up for its UEFA Champions League rematch with Chelsea in the worst possible fashion on Saturday (AEDT), going down 1-0 at the hands of Bordeaux in Ligue 1.
France international Hatem Ben Arfa came back to haunt his old club, scoring the only goal of the game after collecting a Samuel Kalu pass and firing in low on his left foot from the edge of the box in the 36th minute.
It was Ben Arfa's first goal for the club after 366 minutes of play.
The former Newcastle United man played in the Rennes side that won the French Cup in 2019 before departing for a short-lived spell in Spain with Valladolid and signing for Bordeaux last month.
Despite seeing teenage France midfield sensation Eduardo Camavinga make his return from injury, Rennes has now won just once in nine games, a run that includes the first three group games of its debut UEFA Champions League campaign.
The Brittany side was beaten 3-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in its most recent UEFA Champions League outing earlier this month.
It slips to fourth in the Ligue 1 table, behind third-placed Marseille on goal difference and six points behind leader Paris Saint-Germain.
