Liquidated back in 2011, Strasbourg was reborn in the fifth tier but won four promotions in six seasons to establish itself back in Ligue 1. 

In contest low on attacking inspiration it was Strasbourg and not Guingamp — the previous team other than Paris Saint-Germain to win a French Cup competition — that held its nerve in the shootout after extra-time finished with the score goalless.

Thierry Laurey's Strasbourg converted all four of its penalties while Alexandre Mendy and Ronny Rodelin failed to score for Guingamp, the former firing over the bar and the latter seeing his effort saved, as the Alsace club ended a 14-year wait for its fourth Coupe de la Ligue triumph.

With both teams unwilling to throw too many men forward in the early going, it took 16 minutes for either goalkeeper to be forced into action.

Marcus Thuram, with FIFA World Cup-winning father Lilian watching in the stands, was denied the opener for Guingamp as Bingourou Kamara tipped his powerful close-range effort over.

Kamara was called into action again in the 55th minute as he got down low to his left to keep out Nicolas Benezet's drive, while at the other end Adrien Thomasson spurned a gilt-edged chance by turning wide from Ibrahima Sissoko's clever pull back.

Ludovic Ajorque fired a free-kick wide from a promising position as Strasbourg improved in the second half, with Thomasson stinging the palms of Marc-Aurele Caillard from long range.

Substitute Mendy frayed Strasbourg nerves late in the second period of extra time but Kamara was equal to his near-post effort, sending the contest to a shoot-out in which Lionel Carole's penalty sealed the trophy for Laurey's men.
