Lens crashes out of French Cup on penalties
Socceroos defender Alex Gersbach's Coupe de France dream is over after Lens was eliminated 4-2 on penalties by third division club Les Herbiers.
Ligue 2 club Lens went into the match heavily favoured to ease past its third division opponent, but it was the home side that started brighter, creating numerous chances and drawing a succession of saves from visiting goal-keeper Jeremy Vachaux.
Handed his fifth-straight start since joining Lens on loan from Rosenborg in January, Gersbach provided an attacking outlet for his side, linking up well with midfielder Abdellah Zoubir.
With neither side able to reak the deadlock after extra time, the Australian stepped up to convert his side's second penalty. But the effort was in vain, Saint Herbiers completing a stunning victory 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals.
