Sturm Graz pumps 15 past hapless neighbour
Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz scored 15 goals against neighbour FC Holzhacker, sharing the strikes among 12 different players.
It’s not often teams win by 15 goals to one, and it’s even less often they do so without a single player scoring a hat-trick or more.
But that’s precisely what Austrian side SK Sturm Graz did in a pre-season match against FC Holzhacker on Sunday (AEST).
Graz, home of Australia’s James Jeggo, utterly completely thumped Holzhacker away from home, sharing the goals around 12 of its players, although Jeggo wasn’t among them owing to the fact he is on Socceroos duty at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
Stefan Hierlander started the rout in the eighth minute and it was 6-0 by half-time, Deni Alar bagging a double before the break.
Graz went even more goal-crazy in the second period, scoring in the 47th, 52nd, 59th (twice), 64th, 66th, 69th, 72nd and 75th minutes, Fabian Koch also bagging a double.
Holzacker, which is also based in Graz having only been founded in 2007 — that's 98 years after its more illustrious neighbour — scored its only goal from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.
Sturm Graz finished fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga in 2016-2017, qualifying for UEFA Europa League football in the upcoming season.
