Beckham wants Miami franchise to be like Manchester United
David Beckham, set to run his own Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, is looking to his first club, Manchester United, for inspiration.
With an eye on the past, David Beckham is setting the ground work for the future of his Miami MLS franchise.
Speaking with the Daily Star in England, Beckham stated he believes the team should emulate his old club Manchester United.
“We want the club to be run professionally – everything needs to be run like a club like Manchester United,” Beckham said. “You have to look at it like that.”
That’s easier said than done of course, but Beckham thinks he has the mentality to do just that, given his years at the club under Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Luckily, I’ve had a bit of experience in that and I definitely will be a demanding owner,” Beckham said. “I want the team to be successful and the club to successful so I think I have to be demanding.”
That demand may be limited to how the front office is run and the types of individuals who make up the coaching and backroom staffs as Beckham is not planning to get involved with day-to-day activities of the squad.
“I definitely won’t get involved in any team decisions though – the way players are playing and things like that,” he said. “The hairdryer? We’ll I’ve seen it enough times and I know how it works on the positive side of things. We’ll see. But I’m not going to manage or coach. I won’t get involved in any of that. I will just be the owner.”
One can hardly blame Beckham for optimism these days, as the Miami franchise has long been talked about but made very little headway until the last few months, struggling to find a stadium site. But now that there’s progress towards a site at the Orange Bowl, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.
“It’s been a long process and I didn’t think it would be as difficult as it has been – but dealing with the political side of things in Miami has been a lot more difficult,” Beckham said. “I have never been an owner of a team before, so you have to deal with those things.
“But we’ve found a site where we want the stadium and we have to build it before we can come into the league. Our aim is 2018, but trying to build a team is something I’ve dreamed of since being a kid. As a 12-year-old, sat around with your mates, you can only dream of owning a club and thinking of who you want to play for your team, the colors you are going to play in and what you are going to call it.”
Despite admitting to having “a few speed bumps along the way” Beckham believes the franchise is close to making things happen.
“So hopefully in the next six weeks we’ll be able to announce the site of the stadium, the stadium plans and then we’ll move on – it’s really exciting.”
There is still no name picked out for the club. Beckham hopes to get the fans involved, though he immediately shot down one suggestion.
“I actually heard Miami Vice the other day – it’s not going to be that! Miami Reds? I also heard Miami United the other day, but we’ll see.”
