Giulio Ciccone claimed his first Grand Tour stage win with victory on the 10th leg of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday as Bob Jungels took the overall lead on a day that saw Mikel Landa abandon the race.
The Bardiani CSF rider broke free on the final climb at the end of the gruelling 219km route from Campi Bisenzio to Sestola to claim victory by 42 seconds from Ivan Rovny of Tinkoff.
Victory marks a dream start to Ciccone's Grand Tour career in what is his maiden season with Bardiani.
While the 21-year-old will rightly receive the plaudits for a well-judged and sustained attack, it is Etixx – Quick Step rider Jungels who now has something of a grip on the race.
He had started the day a second behind team-mate Gianluca Brambilla but is now the first rider from Luxembourg for 57 years to wear the Maglia Rosa after ending the stage two minutes and 15 seconds behind Ciccone.
Brambilla finished three minutes and 27 seconds off the pace and drops to sixth in the overall classification.
Movistar's Andrey Amador could only gain five seconds on Jungels despite a concerted effort to break away from the rest of the general classification contenders.
Amador is 26 seconds behind Jungels in the GC in second and team-mate Alejandro Valverde is third, trailing the leader by 50 seconds.
Team Sky rider Landa was deemed well enough to start the stage but, after falling seven minutes behind the leaders, withdrew from the race with what has since been revealed to be viral gastroenteritis.
Giant-Alpecin's Georg Preidler launched a solo attack after taking the points and bonus seconds at an intermediate sprint.
He was eventually hauled in with around 17 kilometres to go, but there was no answer to Ciccone's break as he surged up the final ascent to secure a fine win.
