Peter Siddle took his 200th Test wicket as New Zealand were bowled out for 202 on day one of the historic day-night contest at the Adelaide Oval.

Siddle replaced the retired Mitchell Johnson for the third and final Test of the series and marked the special occasion by becoming the 15th Australia bowler to reach the landmark of 200 wickets in the longest format of the game.

The seamer claimed 2-54 with the pink ball, while Josh Hazlewood (3-66) and Nathan Lyon (2-42) also impressed as Tom Latham (50) was the only batsman to make a half-century for the tourists - who are aiming to salvage a 1-1 draw.

But Australia suffered a huge blow as left-arm quick Mitchell Starc suffered a stress fracture in the third metatarsal on his right foot after taking 3-24.

David Warner (1) and Joe Burns (14) then failed under the lights as Australia reached 54-2 in reply at stumps after a crowd of 47,441 witnessed an emotional tribute to Phillip Hughes on the big screen at the tea break a year on from his death.

Martin Guptill (1) became the first batsman to fall to the pink ball in a Test when he was trapped leg before by full, swinging delivery from Hazlewood in the third over after Brendon McCullum won the toss.

Starc had a big lbw shout when he struck Kane Williamson (22) on the pad, but got New Zealand's key man with a fast yorker which struck him in front on the back pad to reduce the tourists to 59-2.

Latham hit four boundaries in his 103-ball knock, punishing any stray deliveries impressively before wicketkeeper Peter Nevill took a fine catch to dismiss him off the bowling of Lyon.

New Zealand slumped from 94-2 to 98-5, with WACA record-breaker Ross Taylor (21) edging Siddle behind and captain McCullum playing a rash shot to head back to the dressing rooms for only four.

Debutant Mitchell Santner made a promising 31 before Starc cleaned him up and Siddle joined the 200 club by dismissing Doug Bracewell (11) before Hazlewood wrapped up the innings after Starc had limped off to be replaced by team masseur Grant Baldwin.

Australia's batsmen had 22 overs to encounter under the lights and they got off to a poor start when Warner was caught by Tim Southee at first slip off Trent Boult (1-15), passed fit after being a doubt due to a back injury.

Fellow opener Burns was bowled after getting an inside edge on a Bracewell delivery, but captain Steve Smith (24 not out) and Adam Voges (9 not out) ensured Australia were just two down at stumps and trail by 148.
