Argentina have made an approach for Diego Simeone to become the new coach of the national team, Atletico Madrid’s president has confirmed.
Simeone is widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football having guided Atletico to the Liga title in 2014, as well as success in the Europa League, the Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.
The 46-year-old has also reached two Champions League finals in the last three years, although Atletico were beaten by Real Madrid on both occasions.
Following Sunday’s defeat in the Copa America final to Chile, Gerardo Martino’s position as head coach has subject to speculation, although the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that he will lead the Under-23 team through the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.
But Atletico’s president Enrique Cerezo claims the AFA have sounded out Simeone for the role but were rejected.
“The AFA called me regarding Simeone [about coaching Argentina] and I told them no,” Cerezo said.
