Siegemund earns maiden crown
Three months to the day from her first WTA Tour final, Laura Siegemund earned a maiden title by winning the Ericsson Open in Bastad.
Laura Siegemund earned a breakthrough victory at the Ericsson Open on Sunday, claiming her first WTA Tour singles title with a 7-5 6-1 triumph over Katerina Siniakova.
Siegemund reached her maiden final in Stuttgart earlier this year, suffering defeat to fellow German Angelique Kerber.
On this occasion, Siegemund was able to go one better as she kicked on after a tight opening set to beat a 20-year-old opponent featuring in her first final.
Siniakova was able to break back immediately after losing her serve at 3-3 in the opener, but the Czech soon fell behind once again.
An unreturned forehand from Siegemund sealed the set and the tone for the remainder of the match was set when the sixth seed broke in the next game.
"I'm very happy," said Siegemund after surging to victory.
"It's my favourite tournament, maybe except for Stuttgart which is my home town. I just love to come here. I feel at home and everything is perfect."
