Osaka navigates into second round
Naomi Osaka and Veronica Cepede Royg picked up wins that reflected the form book on the first day proper of the Brasil Tennis Cup.
Eighth seed Naomi Osaka made safe progress into the second round of the Brasil Tennis Cup with a straight-sets demolition of Ana Sofia Sanchez.
Osaka picked up her first win since a run to the third round of the French Open, dispatching world number 330 Sanchez 6-1 6-1 in just 42 minutes on court.
Veronica Cepede Royg avoided a major banana skin against an opponent ranked 811 places below her, coming out a 6-2 6-3 victor against wildcard Maria Fernanda Alves.
Royg was beaten in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic by Nao Hibino, but could have a chance for revenge in the second round in Florianopolis if the Japanese seventh seed beats Emily Webley-Smith on Monday.
