Venus Williams completed a fine week by winning the Wuhan Open after Garbine Muguruza retired with an ankle injury in Saturday's final.

Seven-time grand slam champion Williams had avenged her sister Serena's US Open defeat to Roberta Vinci in Friday's semi-final.

And the 35-year-old continued to roll back the years against fifth seed Muguruza, and had raced into a 6-3 3-0 lead before the premature end to the match.

Muguruza was clearly in discomfort and Williams earned plenty of opportunities on her opponent's serve, converting five of her seven break points.

Williams has now won 47 WTA titles in a brilliant career, and victory in China represents her second of 2015 after triumphing in Auckland earlier this year.

Wimbledon finalist Muguruza may have come just short, but the 21-year-old can take the consolation of knowing she will break into the world's top five.
