Peng seals home triumph
A home winner was crowned at the Tianjin Open as Peng Shuai overcame Alison Riske in Sunday's final.
Peng Shuai claimed her first WTA International title as she beat Alison Riske in the final of the Tianjin Open on Sunday.
The 30-year-old, whose only previous singles tournament win was in a 125k event, battled to a 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 victory on home soil.
She had to end her title drought the hard way, having been taken the distance in a semi-final match against Danka Kovinic that was concluded a matter of hours before her showdown with Riske.
The American, whose own last-four meeting with Svetlana Kuznetsova also went to three sets earlier on Sunday, was broken when serving for the first set.
Peng held her nerve in the tie-break and carried that momentum through to the second set, breaking immediately to set up a long-awaited triumph for the world number 182.
