Kyrgios: I'm not embarrassed by Wawrinka sledge
Australian number two Nick Kyrgios said while has learned his lesson from sledging Stan Wawrinka, he will not be reining in his emotions.
Nick Kyrgios said he was not embarrassed by his sledge at Stan Wawrinka going public, and warned he will not go into his shell despite a suspension hanging over his head.
The world number 37 is preparing for a first-round clash with Andy Murray at the US Open, less than three weeks after being overheard sledging Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
The ATP acted to hand Kyrgios $35,000 worth of fines for his "banged your girlfriend" remark, and any further indiscretions will result in a 28-day ban from tour events.
Having apologised to all parties involved, albeit not in person to Wawrinka's girlfriend Donna Vekic, Kyrgios said he did not feel ashamed by his comments.
"I originally didn't think it would be picked up [by the courtside microphone] like that but it happened," Kyrgios told The Guardian's Observer.
"I guess I'll just learn from it. I mean, obviously I wouldn't do it again but I wouldn't say I was embarrassed by it at all. I'm not embarrassed by it."
Kyrgios, no shrinking violet at the best of times, said he was not going to change his on-court ways, approaching his self-confessed favourite grand slam at Flushing Meadows.
"I think if I accumulate over $5,000 worth of fines the suspended ban kicks in, so I definitely know that I've got to keep everything in order and obviously be on my best behaviour out there," the Australian said.
"But at the same time I'm not going to go out there not showing any emotions. I am going to go out there and try to be myself."
