World number 11 and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova hopes a stress fracture in her right foot does not derail her Australian Open plans.

The 26-year-old failed to go beyond the fourth round in any of the grand slams last season but an Olympic bronze medal in Rio gave her fresh impetus.

Kvitova went on to win two titles in the closing months of the season, in Wuhan and Zhuhai, and appeared in good shape ahead of the new campaign.

Her preparations have been dealt a blow, though, after she revealed she had suffered the foot injury on Sunday.

Kvitova remains optimistic it will not keep her sidelined for long, and she hopes to still feature in the Hopman Cup which begins on January 2.

"Unfortunately I have a stress fracture in my right foot and need to wear a brace for two weeks," she posted on Instagram.

"While my 2017 preparation is inevitably delayed, I'm still hopeful of being able to start my season on time at the Hopman Cup."

Melbourne has not been a happy hunting ground for Kvitova as she has failed to get beyond round three over the past four years.

She was a second-round casualty in 2016 after falling to Daria Gavrilova.
