Kohlschreiber back on track, Paire suffers Hamburg upset
Benoit Paire fell at the first hurdle at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center, but Philipp Kohlschreiber prevailed in his homeland.
Top seed Philipp Kohlschreiber responded to his Wimbledon failure by beating Carlos Berlocq to reach the second round of the German Tennis Championships on a day when Benoit Paire made a surprise exit.
World number 22 Kohlschreiber was beaten by Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round at the All England Club, but was back in business on clay in his homeland on Tuesday.
Kohlschreiber saw off unseeded Argentine Berlocq 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 in Hamburg to register a 386th tour-level victory, which puts him third on the list of German winners in the Open Era.
The 32-year-old, a semi-finalist at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center two years ago, will now take on another Argentine in the shape of Nicolas Kicker.
Kohlschreiber was only broken on one occasion and claimed five breaks of his own to seal his passage into round two.
There was disappointment for Paire as the second seed suffered a shock loss to the 156-ranked Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who triumphed 7-5 3-6 6-4 to end a three-month wait for a tour-level victory.
Alexander Zverev will not be a winner on home soil this week after the Next Generation teenager, seeded four, went down 7-5 7-6 (7-2) in his match against Inigo Cervantes.
Seventh seed Martin Klizan was among the other winners on day two of the tournament.
