Federer dismantles Evans at Wimbledon
Another Brit fell by the wayside as Roger Federer began to click through the gears to beat Dan Evans in Wimbledon's third round.
Roger Federer looked every inch the master of Centre Court as he swept aside Dan Evans to seal his spot in Wimbledon's fourth round.
The Swiss had seen off another Brit in Marcus Willis in the second round, with Federer again having to retain focus against partisan sections of his usual adoring public.
But neither the crowd, nor any potential lingering doubts over his fitness, could stop Federer as he thrashed Evans 6-2 6-2 6-2 in 86 minutes.
Evans has broken into the top 100 this year and was mightily impressive in beating 30th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round, however the former world number one was several classes above, as evidenced when he broke in a lengthy opening game before taking a 4-0 lead.
Roared on by the home crowd, Evans showed signs of life to first hold and then break his illustrious opponent as Federer's radar deserted him briefly.
But it was a mere blip, with the seven-time champion gliding around the court to suggest he is fully recovered from the back injury which forced his French Open withdrawal.
Having seen out the first set, Federer once again began the second with a pair of breaks, Evans unable to inflict any damage despite landing all but one of his first serves in the two games.
Showing signs of fatigue on his deepest run at the tournament, errors began to creep into Evans' game and the 17-time grand slam winner turned ruthless, rounding out the victory with consummate ease.
Federer will have been heartened when leaving Centre Court to see that Novak Djokovic must fight back from two sets down on Saturday, as his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title gains momentum.
