Berdych cruises through on topsy-turvy day in Rotterdam
Tomas Berdych won on day one of the Rotterdam Open, while Denis Istomin and Aljaz Bedene provided each other with familiar opposition.
Fourth seed Tomas Berdych was a routine winner on a day of surprises at the Rotterdam Open.
Berdych saw off Marius Copil 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in a little over an hour and a half.
The Czech required treatment on a possible hip injury between sets and was limping around the court at times, but the Romanian could not offer up resistance.
Elsewhere, the favourites found themselves on the wrong end of results.
Spanish duo Marcel Granollers and Feliciano Lopez fell to opponents from the qualifiers in the form of Evgeny Donskoy and Pierre-Hugues Herbert respectively, while Dutch wildcard Robin Haase beat Florian Mayer.
Denis Istomin and Aljaz Bedene played each other for the second day in a row at the tournament, with the Uzbek coming out on top.
The pair had faced off in the qualifiers, Bedene the winner, with Istomin a lucky loser.
And fortune was on Istomin's side again as he set up a second-round match with Mischa Zverev or Grigor Dimitrov.
