Australian Open Highlights- Day 7
Kyle Edmund, Rafa Nadal & Caroline Wozniacki win big to progress to the quarter finals
British number 2 Kyle Edmund progressed to his first ever Australian open quarter-final defeating Italian Andrea Seppi with a four-set win. Edmund who is ranked 49th in the world, came back from a set down to win 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-2 6-3 at Melbourne Park.
Edmund served up 25 aces, won 80 percent of first serve points and broke Seppi's service five times. He hit a total of 63 winners, 27 off the forehand, with 40 unforced errors.
It continues an impressive breakout tournament for Edmund, who has eliminated US Open finalist and 11th seed Kevin Anderson, Denis Istomin and Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening three rounds. A quarter-final against Grigor Dimitrov awaits for Edmund.
Rafael Nadal battled into the Australian Open quarter-finals with a hard-fought victory over a determined Diego Schwartzman. The world number one was below his best but came away a 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-3 winner on Rod Laver Arena after three hours and 51 minutes.
Nadal slowly built into the fourth-round clash with the diminutive Argentine 24th seed, yet he was perhaps fortunate to win the first set and lacked ruthlessness in the second. However, the 16-time grand slam champion advanced to the last eight in Melbourne for a 10th time.
Croatia's Marin Cilic will be Nadal’s next opponent in the quarters on Tuesday after winning his 100th Grand Slam match as he mastered Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta in four sets. The former US Open champion won the big points in putting away the 10th seed 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/0), 7-6 (7/3) in 3hr 27min on Margaret Court Arena.
Caroline Wozniacki moved a step closer to a first Grand Slam title with a comprehensive victory over 19th seed Magdalena Rybarikova. The second seed handed out a tennis masterclass to the 2017 Wimbledon semi-finalist 6-3, 6-0 in 63 minutes of mesmerising shot-making on Rod Laver Arena.
The Danish seed is set to take on Carla Suarez Navarro who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the third time. The Spanish world number 39 came from a set and 4-1 down to register a 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 win over Estonian Anett Kontaveit with a delightful display of tennis. Kontaveit looked supremely confident in the early exchanges winning the first set and going 4-1 up in the second. However, Navarro battled back in emphatic style to complete a famous comeback.
