Anderson ends title wait with Winston-Salem success
South Africa's Kevin Anderson celebrated his first ATP title in three years after victory at the Winston-Salem Open.
Kevin Anderson sealed his first ATP title since 2012 on Saturday courtesy of a 6-4 7-5 victory over Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Winston-Salem Open.
Anderson tasted defeats against Kei Nishikori and Andy Murray at the Memphis Open and Queen's Club respectively this year, having lost out in seven finals since victory in Delray three years ago.
However, having proven imperious on his serve in the first set, he saved four break points in the fourth game of the second before his French opponent dropped serve in the 11th.
A double fault handed the South Africa the title - his third career success alongside wins in Johannesburg and Delray.
Anderson reflected: "I've been in a few finals and come up short, which is always tough.
"Each final is a different situation, and for some reason it just hadn't happened for me. Someone has to win and someone has to lose.
"Maybe it's a bit of an added pressure to be the favourite coming into the final, but [Herbert] has been playing great to get here. In my mind we were completely even before the match."
Herbert was quick to highlight the positives, as he said: "I'm really happy since it's the best result of my career.
"There are no regrets because I think I played a good final."
