Shohei Ono ends Japan's judo gold drought
Shohei Ono ended Japan's painful men's gold medal drought in judo by winning the under-73kg category at the Rio Olympics on Monday.
The controversial two-time world champion was imperious throughout the day and dominated world number two Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan in the final, scoring the maximum ippon with an inner leg reap (kouchi-gari).
Japan's normally dominant men had been in turmoil after failing to win a gold medal in London four years ago.
The bronze medals went to Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia and Belgian Dirk Van Tichelt.
