Six-try Newcastle hammer Lyon
A total of 10 tries were shared as Newcastle Falcons got revenge on Lyon in the European Challenge Cup.
Newcastle Falcons boosted their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup, running in six tries to hammer Pool 2 rivals Lyon on Sunday.
The Falcons were beaten 42-12 in the reverse fixture nine days ago, but avenged that loss in style with a 48-29 victory at Kingston Park.
Both sides secured a bonus point, with Lyon staying one point ahead of Newcastle, as they each battle to earn a spot in the last eight as one of the top-ranked second-placed teams.
Much of the damage was done in a first half that saw Newcastle take a 34-10 lead, Juan Pablo Socino crossing for a double while Sonatane Takalua and Joel Hodgson - who converted five tries and added two penalties - also going over.
Zach Kibirige and Callum Chick added to the Falcons' tally with second-half tries, edging Newcastle closer to the 50-point mark.
But Pierre-Louis Barassi, Franck Romanet and Paul Bonnefond gave the scoreline an air of respectability for Lyon, whose sole first-half try came from Thibaut Regard, and earned a potentially crucial point.
