Robshaw takes responsibility for England loss
His team could have kicked for a draw against Wales, but England captain Chris Robshaw said their eyes were on a win.
England captain Chris Robshaw accepted responsibility for his team's decision not to go for the draw in their Rugby World Cup loss to Wales.
Stuart Lancaster's men decided to kick for touch when awarded a penalty late on at Twickenham and they failed to score to go down 28-25 on Saturday.
A penalty goal would have tied the scores in the dying stages, but Robshaw said it was his call on the field.
"That decision comes down to myself," he said.
"I had a word with the other kickers on the pitch and we decided we wanted to go for the win.
"It was a tough kick, we thought that during the two line-outs before we had some good ascendancy in the drive, but unfortunately it didn't come off there."
A hurting Robshaw, whose team sit second in a tight Pool A, said England were eyeing the win when the decision was made.
But he is eager for his side to respond to the defeat when they take on Australia on October 3.
"It was a tough kick. We weighed up the options, but we wanted to go for the win," Robshaw said.
He added: "As I've learned in time, unfortunately it didn't work.
"But it's now about showing a great reaction, it's about the character of the squad. It hurts like hell at the moment for myself and the other guys.
"We feel as if we have let a lot of people down who have come to support us, and in a way that we didn't close out the game when were in a very prominent position.
"Like I said, credit to them, but it's now about what happens next for us, it's about the huge week ahead, we know we have a huge challenge with Australia coming to town, and all focus on that.
"Of course we are devastated and gutted tonight, but we have to move on pretty quickly unfortunately."
