Malakai Fekitoa scored two tries as New Zealand avenged their record-ending defeat to Ireland in Chicago by triumphing 21-9 in an enthralling match at the Aviva Stadium.

The All Blacks had their unprecedented tier-one run of 18 successive Test victories halted by Joe Schmidt's men two weeks ago, losing 40-29 at Soldier Field, and their desire to issue a strong response was clear from the outset on Saturday.

Fekitoa, retaining his place after a double in the 68-10 thumping of Italy last weekend, touched down inside just three minutes, with the brilliant Beauden Barrett adding New Zealand's second in controversial circumstances.

Ireland lost Robbie Henshaw and Jonathan Sexton to injury in the first half and ultimately paid the price for failing to run in a try during two separate periods with an extra body, Fekitoa's second taking the wind out of their sails and securing the win.

The All Blacks made an electrifying start to the match and, after Israel Dagg and Kieran Read failed to power across, Fekitoa plucked down Barrett's excellent cross-field kick and stretched over on the left.

Ireland responded positively, but Sean O'Brien – the only player in the XV to have started the 52-21 win over Canada last weekend – and CJ Stander were held up over the line, referee Jaco Peyper pulling play back for a penalty that Sexton slotted between the posts.

Sam Cane was lucky to avoid any punishment when he caught Henshaw in the head with his shoulder, the centre taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Garry Ringrose.

There was further controversy when Barrett surged in off the scrum for New Zealand's second try in the 14th minute, the TMO confirming the grounding despite the arm of Sexton obscuring the view.

Ireland lost Sexton to injury three minutes later and his replacement Paddy Jackson booted a penalty with Aaron Smith in the sin bin for the All Blacks.

Barrett had another try ruled out for a knock-on and Ireland came out strongly after the restart, Fekitoa yellow carded for a high tackle on Simon Zebo as Steve Hansen's team came under relentless physical pressure.

Again, all Ireland could muster during their man advantage was three points from Jackson, and they were punished for failing to make the most of their dominance.

Exceptional offloading from Barrett and replacement TJ Perenara enabled Fekitoa to dab down his second of the night in a clinical move, ensuring there was no repeat of their Chicago defeat.
