Petra Kvitova through to the semis as Goerges retires
Czech star had the upper hand in the contest prior to Goerges retiring
Petra Kvitova booked her place in the semifinals of the Qatar Total Open after her opponent Julia Goerges retired early in the second set through an injury to her left hip. The number sixteen seed had taken a commanding 6-4, 2-1 lead prior to Goerges deciding to retire.
Kvitova controlled the contest in the early exchanges, particularly on her own service game. An early break ensured that the Czech athlete had the advantage and closed out to win the first set 6-4.
Julia Goerges headed into the second set and found herself 2-1 down to Kvitova. At that point, the German decided to retire not to further aggravate her hip injury meaning that Kvitova progresses to take on world number one Caroline Wozniacki tomorrow semi-finals.
