Free-agent linebacker Jason Worilds announced his retirement on Tuesday, after five seasons in the NFL.

Worilds, 27, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was an AFC Champion with the franchise in his first season there in 2010.

"I appreciate all of the interest from the organizations that have reached out to us the past few days," Worilds wrote in a statement issued by agent Jason Bernstein. 

"With that being said, after much thought and consideration I have chosen to step away from football as I have opted to pursue other interests. 

"I am especially grateful of the opportunity to play before some of the greatest fans in football today. 

"Despite any concern and speculation that may ensue, I appreciate those that are respectful of my decision."

Worilds was taken by the Steelers in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The pass rusher registered 25.5 sacks in 73 games.

He had several suitors in free agency, namely the Steelers and Tennessee Titans, who now employ long-time Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. 

But Worilds told the teams this week that he was considering a new career path and was mulling his retirement, according to CBS Sports. 

Worilds' decision to retire prematurely is tied to religion, and he will pursue a career in that discipline, the report read. 

Linebacker Patrick Willis and quarterback Jake Locker also announced their retirements on Tuesday.

Willis, 30, played eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, but struggled with foot injuries that contributed to his decision. 

Locker, 26, said he "no longer has the burning desire necessary to play the game for a living". He also battled injuries through his five-year career with the Titans.
