BJ Watling gave a positive update after New Zealand trained with a pink ball for the first time, ahead of cricket's maiden day/night Test next month.

The Black Caps will take on Australia in Adelaide using the pink ball, designed to be easier to pick up under floodlights than the traditional red leather.

Watling and his colleagues trained under the lights at Hamilton's Seddon Park on Wednesday, and the wicketkeeper was comfortable enough with the change.

"It was very bright, you could see the ball quite easily," Watling said. "It felt pretty similar to what a white ball does in a black sky, you sort of lose a bit of depth perception, especially at night.

"It did look like it swung a bit, [there was] a little bit of wobble, but Adelaide will be a different temperature, so I don't know how that will affect it.

"We're still reasonably upbeat about it, it's a new challenge and something for the boys to look forward to.

"The boys are pretty fizzed. We're looking forward to what's going to be quite a big occasion at Adelaide."
