Schippers posts record time to clinch 200m gold
With a World Championships record, Dafne Schippers added 200 metres glory to the silver she won in the 100m.
Dafne Schippers became the third-fastest women's 200 metres runner of all time as she sealed victory at the World Championships in Beijing on Friday.
The Dutch former heptathlete produced a strong finish to edge in front of Elaine Thompson and dip for the line in 21.63 seconds - a championship record.
Schippers, who won silver in the 100m, also broke the European record and now sits behind only Florence Griffith-Joyner and Marion Jones in the all-time list for the event.
The eventual winner had to play it patiently, as Jamaica's Thompson - who eventually settled for silver - started strongly along with Candyce McGrone of the United States.
But Schippers stepped up a gear in the closing stages to reel in the frontrunners and finish just three hundredths of a second clear of Thompson.
McGrone slipped further back into fourth, with 2011 winner Veronica Campbell-Brown sneaking in to take the bronze medal.
