Saint-Andre: France eyeing top spot in group
France have all but sealed their spot in the quarter-finals with a 41-18 bonus-point victory over Canada at the Rugby World Cup.
Philippe Saint-Andre said France are focused on finishing top of Pool D after all but securing a quarter-final berth at the Rugby World Cup on Thursday.
France maintained their 100 per cent record after earning a hard-fought 41-18 bonus-point win over Canada in Milton Keynes.
The unbeaten French are virtually assured of a spot in the last eight, with third-placed Italy - who are 10 points adrift - needing results to go their way.
Next on the agenda for France is beating Ireland, who are four points behind, on October 11 in Cardiff and topping the group, which would mean avoiding reigning champions New Zealand in the quarters.
"First target is achieved. Three wins, 14 points and we are qualified for the quarter-final," Saint-Andre told reporters.
"Now our target is to be focused against Ireland next Sunday to finish top of the group."
When asked if France's performance against Canada would be good enough to beat Ireland, Saint-Andre added: "One game is never the same.
"I hear Ireland played fantastically well but we will be ready next Sunday. It will be a different game, a different story."
France have now won five games in a row, including their first three at the showpiece tournament in England and Wales.
"I am happy for the whole team, not just the 23 in the team and on the bench," captain Thierry Dusautoir said.
"This win is going to give us massive confidence as we go into the massive challenge that is Ireland."
