Philip Rivers is intent on playing football late into his 30s, which has not always been so certain, but he cannot say for sure with which team that will be.

The San Diego Chargers' franchise quarterback is entering the final year of his contract at a time when a move to Los Angeles for the team becomes more possible with each passing day.

And although he did not close the door on re-signing in San Diego, Rivers said during an interview with U-T San Diego that he does not plan to discuss an extension this season because of all the moving parts surrounding the franchise.

“What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year,” he said.

“I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don’t see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I’m even more certain to play it out.”

The Chargers last approached Rivers about an extension at the end of last season, Rivers said.

But with nagging neck and back injuries, talks fizzled out between the two sides.

He said that retirement crept into his mind.

That notion has since changed as the off-season played out. 

“The last time we talked was so close to the end of last season, and I was pretty banged up,” Rivers said.

“It was more of the notion of I don’t know how much longer I want to do this. That was one of the scenarios. That has left, and I’m excited. I feel like I have a lot of good years left.”

When it comes to his pending free agency, Rivers, 33, said his priority will be doing what is best for his wife and seven kids, who have strong Southern roots.

That is why, should the Chargers move to Los Angeles, it might not be in his best interest to stay with the franchise for which he has played his entire 11-year career.

He will be paying particular attention to San Diego's negotiations to build a new stadium for the Chargers. 

“What we’ve established here with my growing family is hard to recreate,” he said.

“It’s hard to up and recreate that. I know that moves are part of life. But that certainly is fair to say that [not being sold on moving to Los Angeles' is part of it.

"The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles.”
