Launchbury embarrassed by man of the match award
England second row Joe Launchbury was left feeling embarrassed after picking up the man of the match award in the 33-13 defeat to Australia.
Joe Launchbury has spoken of his embarrassment after being named man of the match as England were dumped out of the Rugby World Cup by Australia.
The second row was singled out on social media as the game's top performer despite England slipping to a 33-13 defeat, a result that ended their hopes of a top-two finish in Pool A.
It was the 24-year-old's first World Cup start in the reverse at Twickenham last weekend, having replaced the injured Courtney Lawes in the pack.
Reflecting on the award, Launchbury labelled it as "strange" and felt there were more worthy winners on the Australian side – with Bernard Foley and David Pocock particularly impressive.
"It was extremely strange to be named man of the match," he said. "It was embarrassing and it definitely won't go on the mantelpiece at home.
"It was a strange award that could have gone to a whole host of guys on their team. The most important thing for them was winning the game, so I don't think they'll be too disappointed.
"I'd been out of the game for a long time and that was my first proper start for a while. I wanted to impress as much as I could.
"Individually parts of my game went quite well, but the overriding emotions were hurt and frustration."
