Khan to face Algieri on May 30
Amir Khan will face American welterweight Chris Algieri on May 30, ending speculation that he could face British rival Kell Brook next.
British welterweight Amir Khan has announced that he will fight American Chris Algieri in his next bout on May 30.
Khan ended days of speculation over his next move by posting a video on his wife's YouTube channel.
Algieri recovered from two first-round knockdowns against Russia's Ruslan Provodnikov to win the WBO light-welterweight title on a split decision in June last year, before stepping up to welterweight and losing for the first time in 21 professional bouts against Manny Pacquiao five months later.
Khan, whose career record stands at 30 wins and three defeats, is a former unified world champion at light-welterweight and has secured impressive landslide points verdicts against Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander over the past 10 months.
But his decision to take on Algieri comes against the backdrop of a growing clamour for a bout with compatriot Kell Brook, the undefeated IBF welterweight champion, who stopped his mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan after four rounds in Sheffield on Saturday night.
Khan expects to take on the 31-year-old Algieri in his native New York and expressed his desire to fight at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
"I'm looking forward to getting this fight announced officially by my advisor Al Haymon," Khan said. "Algeiri is a decent boxer overall. I think it is going to be a good fight for me. Hopefully this can lead me on to the bigger fights in the future."
Khan has previously stated his desire to meet the winner of the May 2 superfight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
