Kenyan athletes stage protest against governing body
Athletes in Kenya took matters into their own hands on Monday at the main Athletics Kenya offices, demanding senior figures resign.
Kenyan athletes staged a protest at Athletics Kenya (AK) headquarters in Nairobi on Monday, calling for a change of leadership at the governing body.
Dozens of athletes reportedly descended on Riadha House to express their grievances with AK amid allegations of corruption and concerns over anti-doping measures.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) called for Kenya to answer questions over its anti-doping program, with Dick Pound claiming that the African nation has "a lot of performance-enhancing drugs being used".
Kipchoge Keino, the chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), stated earlier this month that WADA is "seriously considering" recommending Kenya are banned from competing for four years.
Athletes are said to have locked themselves into the grounds of the AK offices next to Nyayo National Stadium, with police called to deal with the incident.
Protestors held up signs stating AK president Isaiah Kiplagat and vice-president David Okeyo's 'time is up' and called for a 'new beginning for athletes'.
"We are taking united action to bring sanity to Athletics Kenya management and leadership," the Professional Athletes' Association of Kenya said in a statement handed out at the AK headquarters.
