IOC accepts Fredericks' resignation from two committees
Frankie Fredericks has stepped down from IOC committees for the 2024 Olympics and 2018 Youth Olympics.
The IOC has accepted Frankie Fredericks' decision to step aside from two committees in the wake of claims of impropriety relating to Rio de Janeiro being awarded the 2016 Olympics.
Fredericks has strenuously denied any wrongdoing after Le Monde published details of a payment, received in 2009, by a company he was linked to at the time of a vote to determine the location of the Games.
On Monday, the former sprinter stepped aside from the IAAF taskforce charged with coordinating the process of readmitting the suspended Russian Athletics Federation.
The IOC confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the 49-year-old Namibian - who insists the payment in question was for services rendered in a marketing programme and other promotional activities relating to the development of athletics in Africa - had also tendered his resignation from two of their committees.
After taking advice from their Ethics Commission, the IOC Executive Board announced Fredericks would be replaced on both panels.
An IOC statement read: "As far as the allegations against the IOC Member in Namibia, Mr Frank Fredericks, are concerned, the IOC EB [Executive Board] emphasises the presumption of innocence and takes note of his decision to step down as chair of the Evaluation Commission for the Olympic Games 2024.
"He has also announced his intention not to participate in the Candidate City Briefing 2024 for IOC Members and Summer Olympic International Federations in July in Lausanne and in the IOC Session in September in Lima, Peru, which will decide on the host city for 2024.
"Additionally, he has decided to provisionally suspend himself from the IOC Coordination Commission for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.
"After careful deliberation, the IOC EB took the following decision:
"In line with the recommendation of the IOC Ethics Commission, the IOC EB accepts his resignation from the Evaluation Commission for the Olympic Games 2024.
"In line with the recommendation of the IOC Ethics Commission, the IOC EB accepts his provisional self-suspension from the IOC Coordination Commission for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.
"The IOC EB accepts Mr Fredericks’ non-participation in the Candidate City Briefing 2024 for IOC Members and Summer Olympic International Federations in July 2017 in Lausanne and the IOC Session in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.
"In line with the IOC Ethics Commission, the IOC EB recalls the importance of respecting the principle of the presumption of innocence. It also notes Mr Fredericks’ categorical rejection of the allegations made against him."
Patrick Baumann, secretary general of the International Basketball Federation, will replace Fredericks on the IOC Evaluation Committee for 2024, while Lingwei Li has been appointed as interim chair of the Coordination Committee for the 2018 Youth Olympics.
