Minnesota Twins outfielder Torii Hunter has blasted a "terrible" call which ended his side's chances against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

The veteran vented at umpire Joe West following the Twins' 4-0 loss in Detroit, and invited any discipline that might come his way in the wake of his remarks.

Hunter was at the plate with two on and two out in the ninth against Tigers closer Joe Nathan when West rang him up on a checked swing to end the game. 

The call appeared close and Hunter pleaded with West to check with first-base umpire Kerwin Danley — common practice for a home-plate umpire on a checked-swing call. 

But West declined to do so and walked off the field as Hunter made clear his displeasure. 

"I think he had dinner reservations or a concert to play in," Hunter said. 

"That was terrible. We come out here and do our job every day. That's what I do, I come ready to play, I do my job, I battle at the plate. 

"We ask you to do your job as well. Joe West needs to do his job, and he didn't do it well.

"That's a big situation for us and I hate (that) he did it.

"I don't know why he didn't check. He just walked off. So obviously he knew he was wrong. If I'm going to get fined for saying this: Joe West was wrong."
