Gut opens super-G with Lake Louise victory
Lara Gut claimed her third victory in Lake Louise with a stunning run that saw her pip Tina Weirather in the super-G.
Reigning super-G champion Lara Gut claimed victory in the discipline's opening race of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Lake Louise on Sunday.
The Swiss tasted success at the Canadian resort in 2013 and 2014, and she secured her third triumph ahead of rival Tina Weirather.
It was Weirather who set the early pace with a time of one minute, 02.78 seconds on the shortened course - snow having led organisers to make late alterations.
Her lead was short-lived, however, as Gut produced a stunning run. She was immediately up on the Liechtensteiner and although she lost a little bit of time in the second sector she was able to hang on and move into top spot.
Gut then watched the rest of the field try and fail to usurp her, with the likes of Cornelia Huetter and Mikaela Shiffrin well down the rankings as Weirather and Sofia Goggia completed the podium places.
Viktoria Rebensburg and Kajsa Kling threatened to spoil Gut's day but they both lost valuable time in the final two sectors and ultimately finished outside of the podium places - Kling claiming fourth.
Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec had won both downhill events in Lake Louise this weekend but a clean sweep failed to materialise as she came home seven tenths behind Gut in fifth.
