Greinke, Dodgers shut down Reds in odd fashion
Zack Greinke inspired the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the New York Mets trumped the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB on Thursday.
Pitcher Zack Greinke tossed seven shutout innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep.
Thursday's game may seem cut and dry, but the Dodgers won in interesting circumstances.
For just the second time this season, Los Angeles won a game without an RBI or a run scored off an error.
Justin Turner scored in the second inning off a Yasmani Grandal double-play ball, which does not count as a run batted in.
It was not all good news for the Dodgers, however, as star outfielder Yasiel Puig clutched his right leg while attempting to beat out a throw to first base, and said after the game that he re-injured his hamstring worse than last time.
The Dodgers are holding on to a slim two-and-a-half-game lead in the National League (NL) West over the San Francisco Giants, who routed the Chicago Cubs 9-1.
First baseman Daniel Murphy hit a two-run triple in the top of the 13th inning to give the New York Mets a 9-5 extra-inning victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Murphy finished the game three-for-six with a run scored and two RBIs.
The Kansas City Royals and St Louis Cardinals both posted 5-3 wins over the Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks respectively.
Anthony Rendon produced a terrific diving stop to help the Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 4-2, the Chicago White Sox overcame the Seattle Mariners by the same scoreline, the Los Angeles Angels shutout the Detroit Tigers 2-0 and the Toronto Blue Jays lost 4-1 to the Texas Rangers.
The Tampa Bay Rays edged the Minnesota Twins 5-4, while the Pittsburgh Pirates prevailed 2-1 against the Miami Marlins.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Elvis Andrus, Texas Rangers: Andrus is starting to heat up at the right time for Texas. He went two-for-four with a double and a stolen base in a big win against the Blue Jays. He now has four multi-hit games in his last eight starts.
Albert Pujols, Los Angeles Angels: Pujols went one-for-three with a run scored, an RBI and a walk in a win against the Tigers.
Yordano Ventura, Kansas City Royals: Ventura continued his impressive pitching with six scoreless innings against the Orioles. He gave up just two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
KEY INJURIES
Orioles outfielder Adam Jones left Thursday's game against the Royals after crashing into the wall. He is listed as day-to-day.
Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich was out of Thursday's line-up against the Pirates with a bruised knee.
Nationals outfielder Denard Span will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with left hip inflammation.
REACTIONS
"Both times I've gone against him, I've known I have to put my best out there and limit them to the fewest runs possible," Anthony DeSclafani said of Dodgers pitcher Greinke, via MLB.com. "It's tough to go against him, he's the best pitcher in the league. You've got to limit the damage."
FACT OF THE DAY
For the second time this season, the Dodgers won without an RBI or a run, scoring on an error.
Rangers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo earned his 100th career win against the Blue Jays.
Edwin Encarnacion extended his career-high hitting streak to 22 games - the longest in MLB this season.
SURPRISE PERFORMERS
Good: Giants second baseman Kelby Tomlinson went two-for-four with his first-career grand slam in a win against the Cubs. It was the 25-year-old's first home run in the big leagues, and he may be carving out a role for himself even after Joe Panik returns from the disabled list.
Bad: Cubs starting pitcher Dan Haren seems to be running out of gas, as he allowed five runs in six innings against the Giants. He also gave up six hits, walked three and only struck out four in the loss.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Cubs have now lost their last two games as they prepare to open their series against the Dodgers on Friday, Michael Wacha and Mike Leake face off when the Giants host the Cardinals, while the Astros are at the Twins.
