Angels rally past Rangers
A five-run ninth inning saw the Los Angeles Angels stay in the MLB play-off hunt on Saturday.
The Los Angeles Angels rallied to keep their MLB play-off hopes alive with an 11-10 win over the Texas Rangers.
Trailing 10-6 heading to the ninth, the Angels looked set for defeat – only to rally incredibly and score five times.
Erick Aybar and Kole Calhoun homered before C.J. Cron, Carlos Perez and Johnny Giavotella all had RBI singles, and the Rangers were unable to respond.
The Rangers' lead atop the American League (AL) West is only a game, with the Houston Astros just behind after a 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Angels are a game behind the Astros in the wildcard race.
The Kansas City Royals are set for home-field advantage after a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays' 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Baltimore Orioles enjoyed a double-header win over the New York Yankees, claiming 9-2 and 4-3 victories.
The Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 3-1 before Max Scherzer pitched a no-hitter in a 2-0 win and the Oakland Athletics needed 13 innings to beat the Seattle Mariners 7-5.
There were also wins for the San Francisco Giants (3-2 over the Colorado Rockies), Miami Marlins (7-6 and 5-2 over the Philadelphia Phillies), Cincinnati Reds (3-1 over the Pittsburgh Pirates), Cleveland Indians (2-0 over the Boston Red Sox), Chicago Cubs (1-0 over the Milwaukee Brewers), Chicago White Sox (4-3 over the Detroit Tigers) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2-1 over the San Diego Padres).
STAR PERFORMERS
AL:
Astros outfielder Colby Rasmus and second baseman Jose Altuve combined for five hits, four runs scored, three home runs and four RBIs.
NL:
Scherzer became the first person since Nolan Ryan in 1973 to throw two no-hitters in the same season. Scherzer's 17 strikeouts also tied Ryan for the most since 1900 in a no-hit effort.
A LOOK AHEAD
All eyes are on the AL West. The Angels are at the Rangers and an LA win, combined with an Astros loss, would force a one-game play-off for the wildcard. Texas need to win to clinch the AL West. Houston are at the Diamondbacks.
The Royals need a win at the Twins to secure home-field advantage throughout the play-offs. If they lose and the Blue Jays win, Toronto will overtake Kansas City for top seed in the AL.
REACTIONS
"You go out there and accomplish as much as you can," Scherzer said, via MLB.com. "When you start talking about that stuff [records], you don't have words for it."
