Hurricane Matthew forces NASCAR to postpone Charlotte Sprint Cup
NASCAR's Sprint Cup race in Charlotte will be run Sunday at noon, followed by the Xfinity Series race.
NASCAR officials have postponed Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway as Hurricane Matthew continued to batter the Carolinas with rain and wind.
The Bank of America 500 has been rescheduled for Sunday, followed by the Xfinity Series race that was rained out Friday night.
Kevin Harvick will start on the pole, and will be joined on the front row by Alex Bowman, who is filling in for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Some forecasts on Saturday morning predicted the rain could stop as early as 1700 local time, giving workers time to dry the track.
However, the potential dangerous conditions fans may have to get through to attend led to the rearrangement of the race.
Also, Hurricane Matthew has tracked further inland than expected on Friday night and early Saturday. Areas east of Charlotte may suffer greater wind and rain damage, which could require the assistance of state highway patrol officers who might otherwise be scheduled for CMS traffic control.
This is the second straight week that NASCAR has had a Sunday doubleheader after rain played havoc with last week's events in Dover.
