Pedrosa wins as Rossi retains championship lead
Valentino Rossi held on to his Moto GP championship lead despite a 10th-place finish in Spain, with Dani Pedrosa winning.
Dani Pedrosa won from pole as Valentino Rossi clung on to the MotoGP championship lead at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.
Movistar Yamaha rider Rossi arrived at Jerez with a six-point lead over team-mate Maverick Vinales at the top of the standings, despite having not won a race, and a 10th-place finish was enough to hold on to top spot by two points.
Vinales finished in sixth, with Pedrosa leading home Repsol Honda colleague Marc Marquez for his first win since San Marino last year.
Marquez and Pedrosa now sit third and fourth respectively, with the top four riders separated by just 10 points after four races.
Jorge Lorenzo completed an all-Spanish podium, finishing third on his Ducati, while Monster Yamaha rookie Johann Zarco managed a creditable fourth as he edges closer to a maiden top-three result.
Pedrosa appeared emotional after winning the 3000th MotoGP race, wiping away tears as he celebrated.
PUSH BIKES
Jack Miller and Alvaro Bautista tangled on lap six to end the race of both riders, before a round of pushing and shoving between the two threatened to get out of hand.
Fortunately, the 'Rumble in the Gravel' never escalated beyond the squaring up stage, and the pair were swiftly followed off track by Cal Crutchlow and Pol Espargaro.
Crutchlow, who had started third, suffered a big fall at Turn 11, before Espargaro tumbled at the same corner with Crutchlow still dusting himself down.
There was also disappointment for Andrea Iannone, whose race also ended with a fall at Turn 11.
