Iannone tops time sheets in Silverstone late show
Maverick Vinales looked set to clinch top spot in second practice until Andrea Iannone produced the quickest lap of the day at the death.
Ducati rider Andrea Iannone produced a late flying lap to snare top spot from Maverick Vinales in Friday's second practice session at the British Grand Prix.
Vinales had set the quickest time in FP1 but was outpaced by LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow when the Czech Republic GP winner posted a time of two minutes and 2.046 seconds in second practice.
Crutchlow went even quicker on his next lap, but was soon pushed into second by Vinales, who shaved more than seven tenths off his FP1 marker.
The Suzuki rider looked set to finish the day on top when he took the chequered flag, but Iannone was hot on his heels with a lap that sent him three tenths clear.
Crutchlow had to settle for third, while Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Tech3 Yamaha's Alex Lowes - in for the injured Bradley Smith - was 19th fastest on his MotoGP debut.
The second session was largely unaffected by the rain that had earlier interrupted Moto2 practice.
