Lyon frustrated with Montpellier stalemate
Lyon and Montpellier share the points in Ligue 1
Olympique Lyonnais was left frustrated on Sunday evening with their 0-0 stalemate with Montpellier. Following their comprehensive 5-0 derby win over Saint-Etienne confidence was high in the Lyon that they could make it five straight wins in Ligue 1.
However, without playmaker Nabil Fekir, Lyon lacked the cutting edge to break down a stubborn Montpellier side. Lyon fans also showed their support for Fekir by holding up their jerseys in honour of the club captain, who was suspended for the match.
The draw means that Lyon is now three points behind second-placed Monaco.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1 and Caen needed a goal in extra time to rescue a point against Nice. Pierre Lees-Melou opened the scoring for Nice five minutes from the interval.
Caen could have found their way back into the tie from the penalty spot, but Croatian striker Ivan Santini’s effort was saved by keeper Walter Benítez. However, Caen’s effort wasn’t in vain and in second-half stoppage time Rony Rodelin was left unmarked at the back post to volley in his third goal of the season and give Caen a vital point.
