Panthers and Red Wings halt skids
The Florida Panthers and the Detroit Red Wings halted their respective losing streaks with wins in the NHL on Thursday.
The Florida Panthers ended their three-game skid in the NHL on Thursday as they posted a huge 6-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.
Jaromir Jagr and Vincent Trocheck combined for six points between them, with the former scoring two goals, as they helped the Panthers back to their frightening best after some mixed form of late.
Jagr opened the scoring in the first period but the Senators responded through Zack Smith and the two sides traded goals again early in the second as Jussi Jokinen restored the home side's lead only for Erik Karlsson to tie the game again.
It was one-way traffic from there though, as the Panthers put a further four goals beyond their opponents, with Aaron Ekblad, Jonathan Huberdeau and Trocheck joining Jagr on the scoresheet.
The Detroit Red wings ended a losing streak of their own after a late Justin Abdelkader goal helped the home side to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
The Red Wings were in trouble early as they trailed 2-0 in the first period following goals from Jets Marko Dano and Tyler Myers but recovered well in the second, evening the score though Dylan Larkin - who got on the end of an Abdelkader assist - and Jonathan Ericsson, before Abdelkader scored the winner with just over four minutes left in the third.
Alex Galchenyuk scored his 24th and 25th goals of the season during the Montreal Canadiens' 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres, in which Torrey Mitchell scored the winning goal in the third period, while Phillip Di Giuseppe scored 90 seconds into overtime to seal the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.
Elsewhere, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 and the New Jersey Devils got the better of the San Jose Sharks in a 3-0 triumph.
