Novak Djokovic described his maiden French Open triumph as "one of the most special moments of my career", after completing a career Grand Slam with victory over Andy Murray at Roland Garros.

The world number one appeared in danger of suffering a fourth final defeat in five years on Court Philippe Chatrier when Murray took control early on, winning the opening set.

However, Djokovic seized command of proceedings after saving a break point at the start of set two and ultimately registered a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory to finally claim the one major title that had previously eluded him.

Djokovic joins Fred Perry, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Andre Agassi and modern-day rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in an elite club of men to have won all four grand slam singles titles.

Speaking at the post-match presentation on Sunday, the Serbian said: "It's one of the most special moments of my career and I want to thank everyone here for their support."

Djokovic offered thanks to Murray after the beaten finalist used his speech to outline the scale of the top seed's achievement.

"To Novak - this is his day, what he's achieved the last 12 months is phenomenal, winning all four of the grand slams in one year is an amazing achievement," said Murray, who has now lost his last three grand slam finals to Djokovic.

"This is something that is so rare in tennis, it's not happened for an extremely long time and it's gonna take a long time for it to happen again.

"Everyone here who came to watch is obviously extremely lucky to see it. For me personally, being on the opposite side, it sucks to lose the match, but I'm proud to have been a part of today, so congratulations Novak, well done."
